Towards a product independent ERP training model: An Insight from a literature review

Abstract

ERP can be called as one of the most significant contributions of computer science and particularly information systems for the business environment which can support all complicated business process of an organisation including sale, purchase, warehouse and manufacturing into a single database. For such complex system like ERP, implementation involves much collaboration which raises the concern of the success of the project. Among most significant success and failure factors of ERP implementation cited in the literature are training and consultation. For many years the majority of ERP vendors promote their product specific training models as long-term and expensive allowing the organisation to gain knowledge of the ERP system and the way it handles the business process. However, recent studies showed that ERP training can be conducted in the short term and with minimum investment and yet to be effective. Findings triggered a signal and opened a new door for research to investigate vendor-independent training models that require limited investment in training and consultancy. This paper aims to provide an overview of the literature; highlighting the research methods and theories used by authors towards building ERP training models and methods.

Seyed Mohammad Motahar, National University of Malaysia (UKM) and United Nations University International Institute for Global Health (UNU-IIGH)

Mohammad Motahar is a sessional lecturer at Southern Cross University in Perth, Australia. He received his PhD in Computer Science from National University of Malaysia (UKM) in Collaboration with United Nations University, International Institute for Global Health (UNU-IIGH). His research interest is related to critical success factors of ERP implementation projects with the focus on training, consultation and mentoring. 

Motahar is also very active in the industry. He is a senior consultant and project manager at Ioppolo and associates (I&A) a consulting firm based in Perth. He is the primary contact person for the major customers during implementation lifecycle, and he is leading the in-house and offshore ERP teams with experience of successful ERP implementation projects in various industries including manufacturing, Wholesale and distribution and services sector across Australia. 

Muriati Mukhtar, Head of Research Center for Software Technology & Management (Softam) Faculty of Information Science & Technology, National University of Malaysia, 43600 UKM Bangi, Selangor, Malaysia.

Assoc Prof Dr Muriati Mukhtar is Head of Research Center for Software Technology & Management (Softam) in Faculty of Information Science & Technology at National University of Malaysia. She is also the head of service science research group and her main research interests are related to supply chain management.

Dr. Nurhizam Safie is an Associate Professor in the Research Centre of Software Technology and Management (SOFTAM) here in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).

His research and consultancy are focuses on the open source software and related technology, particularly in Hospital/Healthcare Information Systems and Enterprise Architecture. He has presented his research in open source technology in numerous national and international academic conferences since 2004.

Muhamad Yusnorizam Ma'arif, National University of Malaysia (UKM)

Muhamad is SAP Certified Application Associate - Financial Accounting with ERP6.0 EhP6 Over 14 Years Working Experience and 7 years Relevant ERP Experience
His ERP experience is related to SAP modules including FICO, SD, MM.
He is currently working full time in Petronas Malaysia

Shima Mostafavi, North Metropolitan TAFE, Locked Bag 6, Northbridge, 6865 Western Australia, Australia

Shima holds a master degree from Staffordshire University, UK and is IBM certified solution engineer. She is working on business intelligence and data warehouse systems with extensive experience of extracting data from complex ERP systems to build dynamic BI reports and dashboards.
